Entertaining with Belgian Waffles — 3 Ways!

Last week, the POLYWOOD Creative Team took a quick trip down to Frankston, TX for a photoshoot. We had a total of 15 shots planned for the week-long adventure, one of which was a Mahogany POLYWOOD Dining Set scheduled in the morning.

For morning shots, we typically keep it simple. A cup of coffee, maybe some tea, a cute little vase with some fresh flowers…that kind of thing. But, for this morning’s shot, we decided to take it up a notch (especially in light of celebrating Waffle Day) and make some Belgian waffles.

SIX boxes of waffle mix later (for real, we used six boxes), we finally had enough perfect waffles for the shot.

Simple waffles really are great served with just butter and syrup, but we wanted to take our waffles to the next level. We imagined surprising overnight guests with a variety of waffle toppings, hot coffee, and a cozy spot on the patio to wake up, relax, and listen to the birds.

Check out our 3 favorite flavor combinations below:

Peanut butter is possibly one of my favorite foods because of its versatility. You can combine the PB flavor with an endless list of other delicious ingredients and it’s magical every time.

For this waffle, we combined creamy peanut butter with a handful of milk chocolate chip morsels, a freshly sliced banana, and a tasty dusting of some powdered sugar.

Peanut Butter Waffles

To make this waffle yourself, here’s what you’ll need:

  • Creamy peanut butter
  • Milk chocolate chips
  • Sliced banana
  • Powdered sugar

When you think of waffles, typically what comes to mind is all the butter and syrup and sugar and all the other sweet treats you can throw on top of one. But for people like me, starting my day with so much sweetness makes me cringe. When I make breakfast, I make it savory.

For this waffle, I used a classic breakfast combo: bacon and eggs. I topped this waffle with a few strips of bacon and a perfectly fried egg; so perfect, the yolk was just waiting to burst out.

To add a fresh element to this savory waffle, I sliced half an avocado and laid it across the top.

Belgian Bacon Waffles

To make this waffle yourself, here’s what you’ll need:

  • Bacon
  • Fried egg
  • Half an avocado
  • Salt and pepper to taste

On the off chance that peanut butter or savory bacon isn’t what I’m feeling in the morning, my go-to is handfuls of fresh berries. Strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries (oh, my!) make the perfect topping for waffles.

For this waffle, I sliced strawberries and laid them around the edge, and added a handful of fresh blueberries in the center. A few raspberries topped off this delicious masterpiece and then the whole waffle was drizzled with honey (from the cutest honey pot ever), and then lightly dusted with some powdered sugar.

Let’s get real, if you want to look like a waffle-making pro, treat yo-self to a sifter and dust everything with powdered sugar.

Honey Berry Waffles

To make this waffle yourself, here’s what you’ll need:

  • Blueberries
  • Raspberries
  • Sliced strawberries
  • Honey
  • Powdered sugar

Don’t Forget About the Coffee

Whether you prefer the sweet or the savory waffle approach, no morning is complete without coffee. I prefer a cup made from a French press; the coffee always turns out more rich and flavorful compared to making it in a standard coffee pot.

Cold Brew Coffee

When it comes to coffee, the Creative team here at POLYWOOD loves every shape and form of the sweet nectar. French press pairs great with morning waffles, but if you’re looking for an iced, afternoon pick-me-up we definitely suggest drinking some cold brew.

Below is a simple DIY video from Thomas Joseph, Director of Food Development over at Martha Stewart Living.
