Memorial Day Grilling Recipes

Love to grill? Or love to eat what someone else cooks on the grill? Here are some awesome recipes you or someone you love can try this Memorial Day to impress everyone in your family from the young to the young at heart.

Many POLYWOOD team members like to grill, so we decided to try these recipes out. The recipes for kids were tested by team members who have a couple of kids. We wanted to test out these recipes before sharing them with you because:

  1. We love to eat
  2. It’s the neighborly thing to do (we wouldn’t share a recipe with you that wasn’t good — it messes with our street cred)

So here we go. Presenting tested recipes that will make you king — or queen — of the grill.

Watermelon Lemonade

Start things off right with delicious drinks that everyone can enjoy. For the kiddos, watermelon lemonade is a tasty treat with a healthy bonus of vitamins from the watermelon. If you have local honey available to you it’s an even bigger bonus (if not it’s okay, no one will judge you harshly for using store-bought honey). For the adults, the grilled bourbon peach smash is a pretty and palette-pleasing cocktail.

Grilled Peach Bourbon Smash

Do we like the recipes? Yes to both.

What would we do differently next time? The grilled peach bourbon smash was on the sweet side so we recommend adding more lemon juice or going easy on the simple syrup.

Main Course

So, this isn’t just a recipe, per se. It’s also a method of the best way to make burgers on the grill. Someone else tested out a bunch of different ways to create the best burger from concept to creation and shared her findings with the world (there are pictures and everything!). We conducted our own test on these findings.

Do we like the recipe? Yes.

How to Grill the Best Burgers

What would we do differently next time? We didn’t get the burger to bun ratio quite right so the buns ended up being larger than the hamburger patties.

We don’t know any child who doesn’t like food on a stick, and we also don’t know any parent who doesn’t like easy recipes. Plus… meatballs are delicious.

We had to outsource this recipe to a team member who has kids because we wanted the findings to be as legitimate as possible.

Grilled Meatball Kabobs

Do her kids like the recipe? They did. She liked the recipe because it was easy to prepare.

What would she do differently next time? She said she might try different veggies with the meatballs just to change things up.

We make up all sorts of excuses to eat macaroni and cheese so when planning this blog, we searched high and low for a wonderful mac and cheese recipe to sate our cravings. To balance things out we found a healthy grilled corn salad recipe that looks as good as it tastes. After that, we said forget balance and tossed in a recipe for bacon-wrapped jalapeños.

Grilled Corn Salsa

Do we like the recipes? Yes, indeed.

What would we do differently next time? Well, we cooked the bacon-wrapped jalapeños on a charcoal grill (which is more finicky than a gas grill) and a few of them got a little “extra crispy”. But those still tasted good, believe it or not. The macaroni and cheese was SO delicious, and the corn salad was colorful and it tasted pretty good, but it needed lime juice (as recommended by multiple reviews). Once that was added all was right with the world.

Bacon Wrapped Jalapeño Poppers

Carbs? Yes, please. Let’s be real for a moment. Dessert is wonderful, and there’s nothing wrong with indulging your sweet tooth here and there.

Do we like the recipes? The grilled pound cake with berries was wonderful, and the s’mores weren’t bad.

Mixed Berry Hobo Packs with Grilled Pound Cake

What would we do differently next time? BE FOREWARNED — the s’mores are messy. Have plenty of napkins handy. They are very good, but not quite the same taste as what you get when you roast the marshmallows over a campfire. If you go into it mentally prepared then everything will be fine. The grilled pound cake with the mixed berries was bliss on a plate. A few of our team members added ice cream to their plates and were very pleased with the results.

All the aforementioned recipes can be made healthier with the substitutions of your choice. If you or a family member have dietary restrictions due to food allergies/intolerances/lifestyle choices/doctor’s orders feel free to experiment to make your meals work for you. If you try any of these recipes we’d love to know your thoughts and if you tried any substitutions.

Happy Memorial Day from the POLYWOOD team!

  1. If anyone asks how to properly celebrate memorial day, the answer is with barbecue. Never let anyone tell you otherwise. This article probably just proved a point for us bbq lovers.
