USA Kitchen Tour: The South

From biscuits and gravy to pecan pie, Southern food is all about comfort. Southern meals have an appealing, down-to-earth presentation that makes you feel right at home. After all, they call it Southern hospitality for a reason. It’s also no secret that Southerners love their fried food. It may not be great for the waistline, but it’s so good for the soul!

These three dishes are staples of Southern cuisine, and you can easily prepare these recipes in the comfort of your own kitchen:

  • Fried Chicken
  • Brunswick Stew
  • Banana Pudding

Fried Chicken

You can’t dive into Southern cooking without mentioning fried chicken. To get that perfectly tender chicken and crispy crust, you use both a wet and dry batter. Turn on your electric deep fryer and try this recipe out!

 Ingredients 

  • 8 pieces of pre-cut chicken
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon spicy mustard
  • 5 drops Louisiana hot sauce
  • 6 tablespoons Cajun seasoning
  • 3 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups vegetable shortening

 Instructions 

  1. To make the wet batter, crack two eggs into a bowl and whisk them together. Add mustard, Louisiana hot sauce, buttermilk, 2 tablespoons of Cajun seasoning, and 1 teaspoon of garlic powder into the bowl and whisk it all together.
  2. Take your flour and put it in a separate bowl. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of Cajun seasoning and 1 teaspoon of garlic powder over the flour. Stir to combine.
  3. Place your chicken on a plate. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of Cajun seasoning and 1 teaspoon of garlic powder over the chicken.
  4. Add vegetable shortening into the fryer and set it to 350 degrees.
  5. Take one piece of chicken and evenly coat it with flour. Shake off the excess flour and dip the chicken into the buttermilk batter. Let the excess batter drip off, then coat the chicken again with flour.
  6. Drop the chicken into the deep fryer and cook chicken until golden brown — about 8–10 minutes. Use tongs to turn the chicken occasionally.
  7. Repeat steps 5–6 for the other pieces of chicken.
  8. Allow the chicken to rest for about 5 minutes before eating.


Brunswick Stew

Brunswick stew is a simple Southern dish consisting of meat, vegetables, and a tomato-based broth. Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia all claim to be the birthplace of Brunswick stew. Whichever state it came from, they produced a hearty, delicious meal that goes great with a tossed salad and cornbread.

 Ingredients 

  • 2 cups shredded cooked chicken
  • 1 pound pulled pork
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 2 large onions, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 can (28 oz) fire-roasted crushed tomatoes
  • 3 cups frozen corn kernels
  • 3 cups frozen lima beans
  • ¾ cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

 Instructions 

  1. Combine all ingredients into a slow cooker and stir together.
  2. Cook on low for 7–8 hours or on high for 3–4 hours.
  3. Scoop into a bowl and enjoy!

Banana Pudding

When it comes to Southern desserts, banana pudding is hard to top. It’s creamy, rich, and incredibly decadent. Prepare this delicious recipe for your family or friends, and enjoy it out on your patio

 Ingredients 

  • 2 cans (12 oz each) evaporated milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 3 medium bananas, sliced
  • 1 box (12 oz) vanilla wafers

 Instructions 

  1. Combine milk, sugar, and cornstarch in a pot and cook over medium heat. Stir constantly until the mixture begins to thicken. Reduce heat to low and let it simmer for about a minute, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
  2. Line the bottom of a baking dish with vanilla wafers. Add a layer of bananas, then add another layer of wafers.
  3. Slowly and evenly pour half of the milk mixture into the baking dish.
  4. Add another layer of bananas, then another layer of wafers.
  5. Slowly and evenly pour the rest of the milk mixture into the baking dish.
  6. Cover the dish and refrigerate for 4 hours.
  7. Serve with whipped cream and enjoy!
