In 1990, POLYWOOD started in an Indiana garage. Today, we continue to craft durable, sustainable chaise lounges that are built to last, with production facilities in Indiana and North Carolina.

Made in the USA with high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic, our lumber is durable, heavy-duty, and able to handle years of exposure to snow, rain, and sun. Plus, it cleans easily with soap and water and is available in a range of fade-resistant colors that never need painting or staining.

The chaise lounge has been a symbol of relaxation and luxury for over 5,000 years. Its origins can be traced back to ancient Egypt and Greece, where royalty and the elite reclined on chaises made of wood or palm fronds to dine, socialize, or escape the midday heat.

Chaises regained popularity in 16th-century France. And this time, specialized forms emerged, such as the duchesse brisée, récamier, and méridienne. Later during the Victorian Era, the latter became known as the “fainting couch,” where ladies confined in corsets would rest when they felt weak or tired.

Thanks to mass production during the Industrial Revolution, chaise lounges became accessible to all. As society embraced outdoor living in the 20th century, the chaise slowly moved from the indoors out, finding its place among poolsides, sunny beaches, and upper decks.
