Why are they called Adirondacks?

This iconic design is named after the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York, where Thomas Lee invented it in 1903. The original used several flat wooden boards and featured a straight back, deeply slanted seat, and wide armrests.

At POLYWOOD, we’ve designed dozens of new iterations that honor the original but expand the options of silhouettes, sizes, and comfort features to create something for everyone.

OUR PICK

HDPE Lumber Adirondack Chairs

Our favorite material for Adirondack chairs is HDPE. Adirondack chairs made with this material can be left outside all year-round,
clean easily with soap and water, and are available in an array of fade-resistant colors. This durable, weatherproof plastic is also
used to make milk jugs and detergent bottles. 

Wooden Adirondack Chairs

Teak, pine, oak, cedar, cherry, and other natural woods are popular choices for outdoor furniture. Wooden Adirondack chairs can remain
outside all year-round, but they're difficult to maintain and require regular cleaning and oiling to avoid a "silver patina."

Aluminum Adirondack Chairs

Aluminum is a durable, easy-to-maintain material that can be left outside all year-round as it's resistant to water and rust. Aluminum
Adirondack chairs are lightweight and easy to move around the patio but also susceptible to wind gusts.

Injection-Molded Plastic Adirondack Chairs

Unfortunately, Adirondacks made from this material fade quickly in the sun, are vulnerable to stains, and are generally unstable —
breaking easily within a year or two of purchasing.
