Cushions and pillows are a great way to enhance the comfort of patio furniture such as outdoor conversation sets. Beyond adding support and softness, they also put a comfy barrier between you and hot or cold surfaces.

Whether or not you should use protective covers during rain showers or heavier storms depends on the material of your furniture—and how much upkeep you’re willing to do. Iron and wood simply won’t withstand exposure to moisture as well as HDPE or resin wicker, which don’t require waterproofing or refinishing.

While most POLYWOOD furniture can be used on any level outdoor surface, including grass, doing so will likely block the sunlight and water needed for the turf underneath to grow. Grassy lawns also retain moisture, which may cause furniture made of wood and other porous materials to deteriorate quicker than if they were placed on concrete pavers, gravel, or other hard surfaces.
