What Is POLYWOOD made from?

Genuine POLYWOOD® lumber is made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), a durable plastic widely used to make milk jugs, laundry detergent containers, bottle caps, etc. We currently recycle millions of landfill-bound and ocean-bound plastic containers every year and transform them into genuine POLYWOOD lumber. Learn more about our recycling process.

HDPE, by nature, is an extremely durable plastic that is weather-resistant and easy to clean — perfect for outdoor furniture. In addition to HDPE, POLYWOOD lumber includes UV-inhibited pigment systems to help maintain our lumber colors throughout the material, not just on the surface.

How much of the POLYWOOD plastic lumber is recycled?
Genuine POLYWOOD lumber is made up of about 99% of recycled high-density polyethylene plastic (HDPE). The other materials that are blended into the lumber are light-stable pigments, stabilizers, and UV inhibitors which allow the colors of our lumber to remain bright and vibrant year after year. We use ocean-bound and landfill-bound HDPE plastics which include recycled milk jugs, detergent bottles, and other plastic containers that can be found around your household.
